Allan Lanthier over on the Financial Post discusses why our tax laws are a mess here.
Clients will agree that I sound like a broken record, but the Canadian system has so many one-off and boutique tax credits targeted to every single thing under the sun that it gets to a point where you have to have a tax pro prepare your stuff, or you cost yourself or your business money.
This is quite simply wrong. Every individual should be able to file a basic self-prepared corporate tax return. The fact that our system makes this almost impossible means our system is broken. Don’t get me wrong, I very much enjoy my work. And for the right client having a firm like mine around makes sense.
But we shouldn’t lose sight of the fact that a basic personal or corporate tax return shouldn’t require a CPA.
